New obligations from the end of 2026

Datum: 15.09.2026

The European Union is introducing new requirements for the import, export and placing of certain products on the EU market under the EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation). According to the current implementation schedule, the new obligations will apply to most businesses from 30 December 2026.

The regulation covers selected commodities and products derived from them, including timber, rubber, cocoa, coffee, soy, palm oil and cattle. Whether EUDR applies must always be assessed on a case-by-case basis according to the specific product concerned.

One of the main new requirements will be the creation of a Due Diligence Statement (DDS), whose reference number will need to be declared in customs declarations. According to the current information provided by the European Commission, these statements will be managed through the TRACES system.

TRACES (Trade Control and Expert System) is an electronic platform operated by the European Commission to manage and exchange information related to international trade and various EU regulatory requirements. The system is already used for veterinary and plant health controls and related import documentation.

What should companies do now?

  • Review whether imported or exported products are subject to EUDR.
  • Start discussions with suppliers regarding the required information.
  • Establish processes for collecting and managing origin-related data.
  • Prepare documentation and record-keeping procedures.
  • Assign responsible personnel and become familiar with the TRACES system.

We recommend using the coming months to assess supplier readiness and establish processes for obtaining the necessary information. The earlier EUDR requirements are incorporated into communication with business partners, the easier it will be to comply with the new obligations once they become applicable.
