We would like to draw the attention of importers and exporters to an important change concerning the EU regulation on deforestation. Just before the end of the year, on December 23, 2025, Regulation (EU) 2025/2650 was published in the Official Journal of the EU, formally postponing the applicability of the original rules.
Based on this step, key dates are postponed by another year:
December 30, 2026 – new effective date for large and medium-sized enterprises
June 30, 2027 – new effective date for micro and small businesses
What are these obligations?
The regulation requires EU companies to prove that the import, delivery, or export of certain commodities and products did not cause deforestation or forest degradation and that they were produced in accordance with the laws of the country of production.
In connection with the postponement, the deadline for the European Commission, which promised to classify countries according to deforestation risk (low – standard – high) by June 30, 2026, at the latest, has also been postponed.
Commodities concerned > The regulation applies to the following key commodities: timber, rubber, cattle, cocoa, coffee, soybeans, and palm oil.
The obligation also applies to products made from these commodities, such as furniture, leather, tires, paper, chocolate, and others. We recommend that companies use this additional time to thoroughly prepare their due diligence systems and obtain the necessary data from their suppliers.
